What Can You Put in a Dumpster Rental (And What's Forbidden)?
Texas Gulf Recycling is committed to driving sustainability through recycling and waste disposal across the Texas Gulf Coast. Our dumpster rental services are designed to make your cleanout, renovation, or construction project as simple and efficient as possible. However, a successful rental experience—one that is safe, compliant, and avoids unexpected fees—starts with knowing exactly what you can put in a dumpster rental (and what's forbidden).
As your local, family-owned waste management experts, we want to ensure you have all the information you need upfront. Placing the wrong materials in a dumpster can result in significant fines, damage to our equipment, and, most importantly, pose risks to our team and the environment. This guide clarifies the common materials we accept and, critically, the items that must be disposed of through specialized channels.
By following these guidelines, you’re not only ensuring a smooth rental process but also partnering with us in our mission to drive sustainability across the Texas Gulf Coast.

The Green Light: What We Readily Accept

Our roll-off dumpsters are perfect for a wide variety of non-hazardous materials generated by residential, commercial, and industrial projects. When you partner with us, you can confidently dispose of the following:
1. Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris
This is the most common use for our roll-off containers. Whether you’re remodeling a kitchen, tearing down a deck, or managing a large commercial build, we accept:
- Wood: Lumber, plywood, and wooden furniture (untreated)
- Drywall and Plaster: Standard sheetrock and plaster materials
- Roofing Materials: Shingles, felt, and associated debris
- Siding and Flooring: Non-asbestos siding, tiles, and carpeting
- Metals: Non-hazardous scrap metal pieces
2. Household Junk and General Waste
Clearing out a garage, attic, or entire home? Our dumpsters are ideal for general household clutter:
- Furniture: Sofas, chairs, tables, and mattresses (some municipalities have specific rules for mattress disposal)
- Toys and Clothing: General non-recyclable household items
- Yard Waste: Small amounts of branches, leaves, and grass clippings. For larger volumes, we recommend our dedicated wood waste recycling services, which help divert more material from landfills and turn it into useful products such as absorbent material for liquid disposal.
3. Heavy Materials (Specialized Containers Required)
For exceptionally heavy materials, please inform us at the time of booking. These items significantly increase the load's weight and require specialized handling.
- Concrete and Asphalt: Broken concrete, asphalt, bricks, and pavers. We offer specialized services for concrete disposal and recycling, diverting this material from landfills and turning it into valuable aggregate for new construction.
- Dirt and Sod: Clean fill dirt and sod
Pro Tip: If you’re disposing of heavy materials, using a smaller container (10- or 20-yard) is often safer to avoid exceeding legal road weight limits, which can result in overage fees. Check your local regulations, as weight limits can vary by jurisdiction.

The Red Flag: What Is Strictly Forbidden

These items are prohibited under state and federal laws, local ordinances, and our facility's operating permits because they are hazardous, toxic, or require specialized processing. Placing any of these items in your rented dumpster can result in immediate removal and significant fines.
1. Hazardous and Flammable Materials
- Paints and Solvents: Liquid paint, paint thinners, and stains (dried latex paint may be acceptable depending on local rules, but liquid paint is not)
- Oils and Fuels: Motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, and other petroleum products
- Chemicals: Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and cleaning chemicals
- Asbestos: Must be handled by certified abatement professionals
- Explosives: Ammunition, fireworks, and flares must be handled by local authorities
2. Appliances and Electronics
- Appliances with Freon: Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units. Freon is regulated and requires specialized handling.
- Electronics (E-Waste): Computers, monitors, TVs, and batteries should go to e-waste recycling centers.
3. Other Prohibited Items: Volume and Special Handling
- Tires: Must be recycled separately
- Mattresses: Bulk restrictions vary by municipality. Always check local rules before disposal.
- Medical Waste: Biohazardous or infectious waste is strictly prohibited.
- Food Waste: Large quantities are generally not accepted in construction or demolition dumpsters; some small-scale residential waste may be allowed depending on local guidelines.
